UCA professor promotes new book with 12-foot-long alligator gar

UCA professor promotes new book with 12-foot-long alligator gar

CONWAY, Ark. (UCA) - Fish-writer and University of Central Arkansas writing professor Mark Spitzer is driving around Arkansas with a 12-foot-long alligator gar on top of his car to promote his new book, Return of the Gar, just out from the University of North Texas Press.

The last stop on his statewide tour will be at Hastings Books and Music in Conway on Saturday, May 9, from 1-3 p.m. Return of the Gar continues the conservationist crusade Spitzer began 13 years ago to de-stigmatize this monstrous-looking prehistoric fish. Alligator gar, the largest member of the gar family, can grow 11 feet long and weigh more than 300 pounds ― and they’re right here in Arkansas.

Model of the Year Faith Laureles embraces life on top

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (LRFW) - It has been one year since she was named the Oneofakind Baton Rouge Fashion Week 2014 Model of the Year, and model Faith Laureles is still in shock.

“I still can't believe it,” she said about winning the recognition.

Since receiving the Model of the Year award in Baton Rouge, Laureles was also named the Little Rock Fashion Week 2014 Model of the Year last summer and has embarked on a modeling career that continues to surprise her.

With an interest in the fashion industry, Laureles participated in the casting call in 2014 when her mother, Amy Laureles, was looking for a different experience for her daughter. Once announced as the Model of the Year, Laureles was able to advance her modeling career with a contract with talent agency, Oneofakind Talent Inc. The high school sophomore has strolled runways for LRFW, New Orleans Fashion Week, has been featured in photo shoots and has become the face of the second annual OBRFW and seventh annual LRFW.

11-year-old captures essence of Arkansas through photos

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV)- Every day we pass hundreds, if not thousands of people. We see their faces, we see their clothes, but we don't always see beneath their image to their essence.

One young Arkansas girl is trying to change that, one picture at a time.

11-year-old Katie Chandler began the Facebook page Humans of Arkansas in July as a way to tell the hundreds of stories we don't see every day.

"Some people reject us and some people are glad to do it," Chandler said smiling.

"Essentially what's she's trying to do is to capture the essence of Arkansas through photographs, and anecdotes, and quotes," added Katie's mother Amanda Chandler.

Even though she's from the tiny town of Newhope, Katie has traveled all over Arkansas, cementing moments in time in Hot Springs, Little Rock and Fayetteville, introducing new characters, triumphs, and tribulations with each snap shot.
