THV11 in Your Town feature: Batesville

THV11 in Your Town feature: Batesville

BATESVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) – I’m not going to lie. I think I chose Batesville for this trip just because I wanted to visit my old home again and see how much it has changed since I graduated from Lyon.

I could immediately see several changes as I drove in from Highway 167. Southside seems to have blossomed quickly into a busy area; Colton’s has moved to the old Bonanza site, my beloved Quizno’s/”secret” study place has shut down, and a Walgreen’s now sits where the old gas station and Baskin Robbins once stood. Things were even changing on campus and in the downtown area.

LYON COLLEGE

The biggest change at Lyon so far is the new Edwards Commons building. The original building was destroyed by fire in 2010, but a new 44,000 square-foot building has risen in its place, housing a campus store, mailboxes, a dining area and bistro, and the student life center.

Arkansas Tech Unveils Renovated Techionery Theater

The study and practice of theatre at Arkansas Tech University has a refurbished home that provides the safest and most effective learning environment in the history of the program.

Renovations at the Techionery Theater began in spring 2012 with the removal of 22 tons of debris. Construction of a performance space with seating for 144 audience members, classroom space, storage areas and space for set creation began in fall 2012 and was completed in time for the spring 2014 semester.

Classes are now meeting in the renovated space, and the remodeled Techionery Theater will host its first production, “Live/Live Online,” March 6-9.

Arkansas Tech Faculty Member Appears in "Souvenir"

Dr. Timothy Smith, associate professor of music at Arkansas Tech University, will play the role of Cosme McMoon during two upcoming performances of Steven Temperley’s “Souvenir” at Witherspoon Auditorium.

The performances are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be free and open to the public.

“Souvenir” tells the story of singer Florence Foster Jenkins, a terminally off-key and wealthy socialite singer who achieved a measure of fame in the 1930s and 1940s behind a misplaced yet fervent belief in her own musical ability. McMoon served as her long-time accompanist.

In 1944, Jenkins and McMoon played for a sell-out crowd in their one and only appearance at Carnegie Hall.

Joining Smith in the two-person cast and performing the role of Jenkins will be Christine Donahue, assistant professor of voice at the University of Central Arkansas.
