Yell Co. wildfire contained, evacuation order lifted | News
OLA, Ark. (KTHV) -- Fire officials are now reporting that the blaze at Ola is believed to be 100% contained.
Over 1,000 people had been evacuated between Highway 10, three and a half miles east of Ola at the Yell/Perry County line. In addition, residents in the community of Birta were asked to evacuate, as well as the Tucker Road area.
Firefighters are now concerned primarily with the East side of the affected area as winds later today could pick up burning embers from the affected area and spread the fire again.
Emergency workers and firefighters will remain in the area to respond to any outbreaks.
The size of the affected area is reported to be approximately 1,400 acres.
We're told that when the wildfire jumped Highway 10, they evacuated the "Old Highway 10" area near Ola.
A shelter was set up at the new gym at Two Rivers High School just east of Plainview on Highway 28. Officials with the Arkansas Red Cross say crews are still at the shelter to provide food and beverages to the evacuees.
In addition, pastor Drew Brent with the Centerville Assembly of God says they'll have a temporary shelter set up as well. He says the church is about seven miles outside of Ola on Highway 154 towards Petit Jean. Food will not be provided, but they'll have water and air conditioning.
In addition to crews in Yell County, officials say Perry County crews were assisting in containing the fire.
According to the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, Danville assisted by sending a water tanker to the scene. The U.S. Forestry and Arkansas Forestry responded with six dozers and ground crews. They say several volunteer fire departments from around Yell County assisted as well.
