Arkansas Tech University leads state in STEM student recruitment

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (July 31, 2015) -- Data released by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education on Friday, July 31, indicates that Arkansas Tech University is the statewide leader in attracting incoming students who wish to major in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

The ADHE data shows that over the past five years, 1,541 first-time entering students at Arkansas Tech chose to major in one of the STEM fields.

That figure represents 20.3 percent of all STEM students in the State of Arkansas since 2010, and it ranks Arkansas Tech ahead of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville (1,239 students), Arkansas State University (1,213 students), the University of Central Arkansas (1,055 students) and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith (660 students) over the past five years.

Arkansas Tech University presents Walton Leader Scholars

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (Arkansas Tech University) - Arkansas Tech University has selected 18 Walton Leader Scholars for the third cohort of its LEAD 21 program.

LEAD 21 is an initiative by the Arkansas Tech Center for Leadership and Learning that makes the Arkansas Tech Master of Education degree in educational leadership available to selected teachers in northwest Arkansas, Pulaski County, the Delta region and districts throughout Arkansas that have priority schools or schools in need of improvement. 

Courses are delivered through a blended format of online course offerings and seminars.

LEAD 21 is made possible through a $974,157 grant from the Walton Family Foundation. The program began in summer 2013.

Free summer movie lineup in Heber Springs

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - Free summer movie event 'A Night Under the Stars' begins June 20. 

Teen Recruiters has teamed up with Swank Motion Pictures and local businesses to provide a free movie watching experience at Spring Park in downtown Heber Springs. 

The 2015 lineup includes:

Saturday, August 22 - Captain America The Winter Solider (PG-13)

Pre-movie events will begin at 7 p.m. and films will begin at dusk.

Local junior golfers compete for national competition

Local junior golfers compete for national competition

CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - The Conway Country Club plans to host a tournament for local junior golfer at the beginning of June. 

The Arkansas District of Optimist International is inviting all local junior golfer to compete in the Arkansas Junior Optimist Qualifying Golf Tournament Saturday, June 6. Girls and boys ages 10 through 18 are eligible to compete. 

Winners of the competition can qualify to compete in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA National Resort and Spa Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. in late July.
